Millions of years of rain and erosion have carved out an underground marvel in Gopeng, Perak State. Gua Tempurung’s charm lies in its massive scale: spanning a length of some 4.5 km, covering an underground river and five giant chambers, Gua Tempurung is one of the largest caves in Peninsular Malaysia.
Casual adventurers can enter a two-kilometer section developed as a “show” cave, with walkways and electric lights. More experienced spelunkers can try one of the cave’s more challenging tour packages, taking as much as three hours to complete as they wind through Gua Tempurung’s domes and wade through the underground river along the way. Visitors can also borrow helmets and torch lights while there.
The cave has long been known to locals—Communist rebels sheltered here during the “Emergency” era from 1948 to 1960, leaving graffiti that you can still see on the cave walls to this day.
