Following the success of its inaugural edition last year, the Jakarta Marathon, – the biggest running event in Indonesia – will again turn the streets of the capital city of Jakarta into a colossal race track for thousands of runners on 26th October 2014.

Taking place at Kota Kasablanca Mall, on Wednesday, 7th May 2014, Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Sapta Nirwandar joined by Minister of Youth and

Sports, Roy Suryo; and the Chairman of the Federation of Community Recreational Sports of Indonesia (FORMI), Hayono Isman, officially launched preparations for the Mandiri Jakarta Marathon.

In his speech, Sapta Nirwandar emphasized that the principal objective of the event is to establish Jakarta as metropolitan and capital city, to become the focal point of attraction and cultural appeal of the entire Indonesian Archipelago. This year, the Jakarta Marathon targets a larger number of participants, increasing from last year’s 10,000 runners to 15,000 runners.

“With the target of 15,000 runners, who most definitely will be accompanied by their friends and relatives, it is estimated that over 50 thousand people will gather in Jakarta during the Marathon. Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls will be visited, so that the event will significantly impact the economy” added Sapta.

Similar to last year’s Jakarta Marathon, the starting point and finish line will take place at the Southwest gate of the National Monument (Monas). This year, there will be four categories being competed, namely: the marathon 42,195 km, half marathon 21 km, 10 km and a special “marathoonz” category (a 1.3 km marathon for children).

As in previous year, The Marathon route will take competing athletes and participants pass some of Jakarta’s most well known landmarks that include the National Monument or Monas, the Istiqlal Mosque and the Cathedral across, the Old Batavia and the Fatahillah Square, and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.

The event is initiated by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, and organized by Inspiro as the appointed promotor and organizer, working in close coordination with Amaury Sports Organization (ASO).
