Miss Indonesia 2014, Elvira Devinamira and her impressive Costume which in itself is an Ode to the Borobudur Temple, successfully stole the attention of all spectators, emerging as Winner for the Best National Costume at the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant, as aired from Miami, USA on Sunday, 25th January 2015.
Wearing the culturally-rich inspired costume entitled The Chronicle of Borobudur, Elvira Devinamira successfully outshone other national costumes finalists includingthose of Canada, Argentina, Germany, and India. The Best National Costume award came after fans voted for three days when #MissUniverseIndonesia became the top trending vote.
Inspired by the magnificent Borobudur Temple in Central Java Province, the costume was designed by Dynand Fariz, founder of the annual Jember Fashion Festival. The costume is made of silk taffeta combined with Indonesian traditional songket (gold and silver woven textile)motifs. The costume features Borobudur Temple reliefs decorated with beautiful beads and crystals. Completing the interpretation of Borobudur, a 5 kilogram frame in the form of stupas of the temple was attached to the back of Elvira. Adding to the grandeur, Miss Indonesia also wore a majestic triangular headpiece featuring Borobudur’s stupa with distinct Indonesian motifs. The costume was constructed since September 2014 after aresearch and study for one full month.
“The costume weighs 20 kilograms in total. I wore it twice preparing for the event” stated Elvira on 17th December 2014, prior to her appearance in Miss Universe 2015, reported tempo.co.
In the pageant, Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe 2015, beating runner-up Miss USA Nia Sanchez, and finalists Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell, Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha, and Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen.
Meanwhile, at the Miss International 2014 Pageant held on 11th November 2014 in Tokyo, Japan, Elfin Pratiwi from Indonesia also won the Best National Costume by also wearing a culturally inspired costume entitled Tale of the Siger Crown from the province of Lampung on Sumatra.
