This is Po Nagar Cham Towers — an ancient Cham sanctuary rising above the river, dedicated to Yan Po Nagar, the Mother Goddess of the land.

Long before modern borders and names, this hill was already sacred. From as early as the 8th century, the Cham people built and rebuilt this place in stone and brick, after earlier sanctuaries were destroyed and rebuilt again through invasion, time, and renewal. Empires shifted around it — Khmer, Cham, and later Vietnamese history all passed through this land — yet the temple was never erased from memory. It was always restored, always returned to.

It is said that Po Nagar is not only a goddess, but a symbol of creation itself — the earth, the harvest, the weaving of life, the quiet force that sustains human existence. For the Cham, she was not distant. She was the mother of the country, the origin of meaning, the protector of continuity.

And so something unusual happened in history: kingdoms collapsed, but devotion did not. Wars ended, but worship continued. Even when political power disappeared, sacred memory remained anchored in this place.

This is why Po Nagar was never just architecture. It is continuity disguised as stone. It is belief surviving beyond the rise and fall of human systems.

And it raises a deeper question:

What is it in human beings that refuses to let the sacred disappear?

Because history seems to suggest something quietly persistent — civilizations do not endure only through power, but through what they choose to believe in.

Perhaps that is why this place still stands above Nha Trang today. Not because it resisted time, but because it was carried through time by meaning itself.

Some things are not destroyed by history.
They are preserved by it.

Legends are one of them.
And here, time does not erase meaning — it reveals it.

Perhaps the most exquisite of Angkor’s countless temples, Banteay Srei stuns visitors with its intricate sculptures and reliefs, all chiseled out of a rose-hued sandstone, all narrating scenes from Hindu myths in arresting detail (maybe attributable to the supervision of the patrons, who were uniquely court scholars and not monarchs). It is, thus, rather deservedly accorded the title of ‘the jewel of Khmer art’, and those inclined can spend hours if not days studying and appreciating every nook and panel. It is also testament to the Khmer’s finesse that they built this temple in the year 967, well before mainland India even conceived the likes of the Kandariya Mahadeo in Khajuraho and Brihadisvara in Tanjore (all three are Shiva temples, by the way). Such as the beauty of the temple that famed French writer André Malraux stole four bas reliefs from here during a 19th century visit, only to be arrested soon after (it is another matter that the French intellectual community deplorably rallied behind him and had him acquited without punishment; the panels however were thankfully restored).
