Walking through Hoi An at night feels like stepping into a space built entirely out of light. Looking up into this canopy, the dark sky completely disappears behind a perfect, repeating geometry of warm reds and soft, floral yellows. The way the lanterns are strung together creates a glowing tunnel that naturally guides your eyes—and your feet—forward.

This town is famous for its lanterns, a beautiful tradition left behind by centuries of merchants who once traded along the river. Today, they are more than just a nod to the past; they are the visual heartbeat of the city. Each glowing sphere is carefully crafted from bamboo and silk, believed to bring peace, luck, and happiness to anyone who walks beneath them.

What I find most mesmerizing is the rhythm of the arrangement. You have these delicate, individually patterned fabrics hung in such precise, symmetrical lines. It is a wonderful reminder of how simple, repeating shapes and warm light can completely transform an ordinary walkway into something magical.

The impressive Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen temple was originally established in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period, though at the time it was far more modest than the grand complex seen today. This royal temple is situated in Bangkok’s Phasi Charoen district, along a network of canals, including Khlong Phasi Charoen.

Although its full name is quite long, locals typically refer to it simply as Wat Paknam. In Thai, “Paknam” means “river mouth” or “waterfront,” reflecting the temple’s close connection to the surrounding waterways.
The temple rose to prominence under the guidance of the revered meditation master Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro, who served as abbot during the first half of the 20th century. While long well known among Thai devotees, it has increasingly attracted international visitors, especially after the construction of the striking Maharatchamongkhon stupa in 2012, admired for its magnificent dome and intricate interior.

More recently, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen temple has gained widespread recognition thanks to its colossal Buddha statue. Standing 64 meters tall, the statue was constructed between 2017 and 2021 in front of the stupa. Now the tallest Buddha statue in Bangkok, it has become an iconic landmark, widely shared through photos and videos by visitors from around the world.
